Merritt Lyndon Fernald: 1914 Trip

In 1914, Fernald made a very quick trip to southwestern Newfoundland. He was accompanied only by one of his students, Harold St. John.

The two managed only a day and a half on the "limestone" summit of Table Mountain, north of Port au Port, but, despite horrendously foggy conditions, they managed to collect a number of very interesting "limestone plants" that had been missed on the 1910 trip [example specimen: Poa saltuensis - click photo to enlarge].
