The Species Status Advisory Committee (SSAC) was established under the Newfoundland and Labrador Endangered Species Act, which was passed on December 13, 2001. The Committee's role is to identify "species-at-risk" within the Province, and to recommend, to the Government Minister responsible, the appropriate conservation status of each ("endangered", "threatened", "of special concern" [formerly "vulnerable"]), based upon the best scientific, traditional and local ecological knowledge available.
