Reserves and protected areas are critical for conserving sensitive ecological areas and species.

Formal Reserves:
Within the "limestone regions" of the Island of Newfoundland the following formal reserves and protected areas exist:
Critical and Recovery Habitat:
Under the Newfoundland and Labrador Endangered
Species Act [Section 28], when a species has been designated as vulnerable,
threatened, endangered or extirpated, the Government Minister responsible may, by order, set aside, for a specified of
time, (a) an area of land to be protected as recovery habitat; and (b)
an area of land to be protected as critical habitat.
