Insects

The insect fauna of our "limestone regions" is not well known. However, two species are of particular interest.

The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) and the seed maggot (Delia platura), are closely-associated with our endemic "limestone barrens" mustard species, Braya longii and Braya fernaldii.

Insect Pest Research is ongoing on the "limestone barrens".

Several Silken Fungus Beetles - Cryptophagus difficilis [Burnt Cape, St. John Island], Cryptophagus setulosus [Burnt Cape] (Majka and Langor, 2010), Atomaria ephippiata [Burnt Cape], and Atomaria fuscata [St. Barbe, Burnt Cape] (Majka et al., 2010) - have been recorded from the limestone barrens; as have the Moss Beetles - Byrrhus americanus [Cooks Harbour], and Chaetophora spinosa [Burnt Cape] (Majka and Langor 2011).
