Merritt Lyndon Fernald: 1911 Trip
|
Fernald returned to Newfoundland in 1911. This time, his travelling companions were Karl M. Wiegand (again),
Edwin B. Bartram, and Henry T. Darlington. Their base was Grand Falls, in the centre of the Island.
From Grand Falls, collecting excursions were made west to the headwaters of the Humber River, north to
Notre Dame Bay, and east to the Avalon Peninsula. A number of "limestone plants" were collected from "limestone" outcrops
in the region. For some reason, a detailed account of the trip
was never published, although a short article contrasting the floras of eastern and western Newfoundland did result
(Fernald 1918).
